LIVE - NOTTINGHAM ROCK CITY, UK - 2nd DECEMBER, 2000

REVIEW: by Fedja of S-B-S...

In comparison to the My Ruin gig in Nottingham last year, the crowd had more than tripled in size.  This is the testament to the overwhelming increase in popularity of My Ruin since their formation.  It seems that people have finally decided to give Tairrie B's new band a chance, and as any fan could have told them - they like it.

The gig @ Rock City was fast, furious & really heavy.  If there were any doubters in the crowd, they must have been converted.

The evening began with the support band Sugar Coma, who actually came on quite early....  They warmed up the crowd well with their set.  The music was heavy and played well, in fact the only criticism we have about this band we'd never encountered before is that they remained quite static on the stage.  Their set was enjoyable & seemed to be well received by the crowd.....  The crowd was a bit quiet at first and by the end things were mental...

When the lights went down in anticipation of My Ruin, it became clear why the crowd were there - they were desperate to hear My Ruin play their set of tracks from the new album and last years release 'Speak & Destroy'......

My Ruin opened their set with their first single from 'A Prayer Under Pressure.......' 'Beauty Fiend' after Tairrie did her spoken part from the new album.  The crowd loved it & formed a huge pit.... it was mental!!!  'Beauty Fiend' was followed immediately by the heavy, fast & fierce 'Stick It To Me' encouraging the crowd to really let go.... and they really did.  The atmosphere was electric.

Soon followed one of the highlight - 'Sick With It' with guest vocals from Paul of Breed 77 who supported My Ruin last year.  The vocals blew us away, just as they did last year.....  And by the was Paul has had all his hair cut of...... and it's really short....  When we were talking to Tairrie, he came over and we didn't recognise him at first....

Other guests were Jessica, the vocalist of Sugar Coma and the former Soulfly drummer Roy....  They all came together for the final song....  Roy took over the drums and the whole thing was just amazing and blinding and it left the crowd so thirsty for more.

The whole My Ruin set was amazing...  The material from the new album was so heavy as we expected and the older songs from Speak & Destroy sounded kind of changed.... a bit here, a bit there....  but all in a good way.... and they sounded a lot heavier and they rocked.

If we were to compare this gig to the gig last year....  this gig was a lot faster, stronger, heavier & so exciting, it's hard to describe....  And considering last years gigs were briliant and we had such a good time.... and we ended up seeing My Ruin four time in one week......... you may be able to imagine how exciting this was.

Tairrie B was her usual charming sight & her voice sounded as amazing & electrifying as always - her stage presence and interactions with the crowd making the gig magical.

Meghan (bass) showed her true talents by playing difficult parts easily.  Her confidence on stage adds to the strength of the band & her powerful vocals show another of her strengths.

Yael is the new drummer...... and she was COMPLETELY AMAZING.  Like Meghan and Tairrie she commanded respect with her strong stage presence & she made the stage even more exciting.  This is the only gig we have been to where we spent time watching the drummer in amazement.  As well as being an unreal, talented drummer, she has such style in the way she plays - she is the definition of a true heavy metal drummer.

The new guitarist, Mick Murphy, completed the line up.  He has added his own style of playing to the band and it's successful.  He is an excellent guitarist bringing only good things to My Ruin.  As he plays he seems to really feel the music & this is reflected in his music.

Overall My Ruin are professional, persuasive, heavy, light & a really close team.  They bring top class entertainment, each band member giving their all.  The passions of the lyrics is therefore felt completely by the crowd - this is the whole point of music!!!

The pinnacle of this passion was felt in Tairrie's true tribute to her friend, Lynn Strait.  The support for her and respect for Lynn was obvious by the crowds cheers as they played 'Rock Star'....  Everyone agreed that's what a tribute is all about.  Everyone also must feel this is one of the strongest gigs seen in a long time, and we can't wait till this coming Wednesday (Dec 6th) to see them again at Dudley.
